सूबेदार रामजी मालोजी सकपाल (डॉ आंबेडकर के पिताजी) सन 1896 में सतारा में बसने के लिए आए। इस समय उन्होंने कबीर पंथ की दीक्षा भी ग्रहण की थी उनको वहां स्टोर कीपर की नौकरी करने के बाद भी पर्याप्त समय मिलता था। वे सुबह 5:00 से भजन स्तोत्र गाते थे और सात में 9:00 बजे तक पूजा पाठ करते थे। फिर शाम को भी वह एक-दो घंटा पूजा पाठ करते थे। वह हर अमावस और पूर्णिमा को निराहार उपवास करते थे। क्योंकि वह बचपन से ही संस्कारों में पले थे उस समय दलित समाज में चारों ओर इसी प्रकार के संस्कार प्रचलित थे। उन दिनों की धार्मिकता का स्वरूप इसी प्रकार का था। रामजी मालोजी सकपाल सूबेदार अपने घर के सभी सदस्यों के साथ सूर्यास्त के समय पूजा प्रार्थना के लिए बैठते थे वह प्रार्थना में कबीर के दोहे तुकाराम और चोखामेला के अभंग, दत्त के संस्कृत स्तोत्र, गीता के कुछ श्लोक आदि करते थे और अन्य लोगों उनके पीछे-पीछे दोहराते थे। वे श्लोक कहते समय उनके चेहरे पर जो गंभीरता आती थी उसको उनके इर्द-गिर्द बैठे लोग देखते ही रहते थे। जब पूजा समाप्ति की ओर आती थी तब वह हाथ में बताशा लेकर उसके ऊपर कपूर रखकर जलते थे। कपूर के जलने के बाद वे गीता के दूसरे अध्याय के 29 वे से लेकर 33 वें श्लोक तक का पाठ करते थे। इन श्लोक का उच्चारण करते समय उनका स्वर बहुत ही गंभीर और माधुर होता था।
इन श्लोक का सार यह है की “आत्मा अमर है उसको कोई मार नहीं सकता या वह किसी को मारता नहीं। हथियार उसके टुकड़े नहीं कर सकते। जिस प्रकार मनुष्य कपड़े पुराने होने के बाद उनको उतार देता है और नए कपड़े पहनता है उसी प्रकार आत्मा मरे हुए शरीर का त्याग कर नए शरीर में प्रवेश करती है ।
अंतिम श्लोक कहने के बाद वे अपनी अंजलि सबके सामने करते थे। और जलते हुए कपूर पर सभी के पंजा रखकर दर्शन लेने के बाद उस बतासे को जलते हुए कपूर के साथ आग में डाल देते थे। इस प्रकार की विधि वे पूर्णिमा के दिन चंद्रोदय होते समय करते थे। पूजा होने के बाद भी सभी को प्रसाद बांटते थे । प्रसाद बांटते बांटते सभी को आशीर्वाद भी देते थे वह भीवा (डॉ आंबेडकर ) को भी आशीर्वाद देते थे उसके सर से तथा पीठ से हाथ फेरते और अपना उपवास छोड़ने को बैठ जाते थे।
उसे समय रामजी सूबेदार पर हिंदू संस्कार का बड़ा प्रभाव था। हिंदू सरकारों के प्रति उनके मन में बड़ी आस्था और श्रद्धा थी हिंदू धर्म के असली रूप और उसके परिणामों को जानने समझने के लिए उनके पास समय ही कहां था। उसे समय दलित समाज की स्थिति पूरी तरह गतिहीन और लाचार थी। अधर्म भी उनके लिए धर्म था दलित तो अपने आप को हिंदू समझता था किंतु स्वर्ण लोग उन्हें हिंदू समझने के लिए तैयार नहीं थे।
रामजी सूबेदार कबीर पंथ की दीक्षा लेने से पहले हर दिन पूजा प्रार्थना करते थे। कबीर पंथ के रिवाज के अनुसार उनका पंथ की बन्दगी दिन में दो से चार बार करनी पड़ती थी। किंतु सूबेदार केवल दो बार ही बन्दगी करते थे। कबीर पंथ की दीक्षा लेने के बाद उन्होंने मांसाहार त्याग दिया था। वह कभी कबार शराब पी लेते थे किंतु उनको उसका शौक बिल्कुल नहीं था। कबीर पंथ की दीक्षा लेने के बाद उन्होंने कभी शराब और मांसाहार को हाथ तक नहीं लगाया उनके घर की महिलाएं सुबह स्नानादि करने के बाद ही भोजन तैयार करती थी। कबीर पंथ की दीक्षा लेने के बाद घर का वातावरण पूरी तरह बदल गया था। उनको छोड़कर घर के अन्य लोग मांसाहार करते थे। अब उनके घर में दो चूहे जलते थे जिस दिन घर में मांस पकता था। उसे दिन मांस पकाने वाला चूल्हा अलग होता था। और शाकाहार का चूल्हा अलग जलता था उनका भोजन उसे दिन जिस किसी के द्वारा पकाया जाता था । उसको सूबेदार के भोजन ग्रहण करने के समय तक उसे शाकाहारी चूल्हे के पास ही रहना पड़ता था । दूसरों को उसे चूल्हे के पास आने पर रोक लगा दी जाती थी।
भक्ति भजन और पूजा के कारण उनके घर का माहौल कैसे बना हुआ था इसके बारे में डॉ आंबेडकर स्वयं कहते हैं
“हमारा परिवार गरीब था फिर भी उसके कारण घर का वातावरण स्पष्ट रूप से पढ़े-लिखे परिवार के योग ही था। हम लोगों में पढ़ने की अभिरुचि पैदा हो हमारा चरित्र अच्छा बने इसके लिए हमारे पिता बहुत ही सावधानी बरतते थे। वह हम लोगों को भोजन के लिए बैठने से पहले पूजा स्थान में बैठकर भजन, अभंग, दोहे आदि गाने लगते थे। मतलब सभी से मैं हमेशा ही टाल-मटोल करता था। मैं जैसे तैसे दो-चार अभंग आधे अधूरे कर कर भोजन के लिए थाली पर आकर बैठ जाता था। बाद में पिताजी जान बूझ-कर तुरंत हंसते हुए पूछते थे “क्यों आज आपके भजन जल्द ही खत्म हो गए क्या” उनके सवाल का जवाब देने से पहले ही हम वहां से भाग जाते थे लेकिन यह सब सुबह के समय चल जाता था शाम के समय हमारे पिताजी यह सब कुछ चलने नहीं देते थे उनका यह सत्य नियम था कि शाम को 8:00 बजाने के बाद मेरी दोनों बहने मेरे बड़े भाई और मुझे पूजा स्थान के पास अवश्य उपस्थित रहना होता था। और जो अनुपस्थित रहता था, उसको वह कभी माफ नहीं करते थे वह जिस समय बड़ी भक्ति भावना से संतों के अभंग और कबीर के दोहों का उच्चारण करते थे उसे समय बहुत ही गंभीर और मंगलमय वातावरण बन जाता था।
हमारे पिताजी को धार्मिक पुस्तकों का सारा का सारा पाठ पूरी तरह कंठस्थ था। वे बिना रुके अभंग (श्लोक) के बाद अभंग(श्लोक) कर सकते थे। पिताजी के पाठांतर का हमारे लिए बड़ा आकर्षण था। उसी प्रकार मेरी बहने अपने मधुर गले से जब अभंग(श्लोक) गाती थी तब मुझे भी ऐसा लगता था कि धर्म और धार्मिक शिक्षा मनुष्य के जीवन के लिए जरूरी है। कई लोग समझते हैं कि “मैं नास्तिक हूं” किंतु यह बात सच नहीं है। यह मेरे बारे में लोगों की गलत धारणा है जो जो लोग मेरे संपर्क में आते हैं उनको धर्म के बारे में मेरी श्रद्धा और प्रेम के बारे में अच्छी तरह मालूम हो जाता है। मैं धार्मिक पाखंड और कर्मकांडों को कदापि पसंद नहीं करता… पिताजी द्वारा कंठस्थ ज्ञान के कारण मुझे मुक्तेश्वर, तुकाराम आदि संत कवियों के काव्य याद हो गए हैं। केवल इतना ही नहीं तो मैं उन काव्यों के बारे में मन में सोचने लगा हूं मराठी संत कवियों का गहन अध्ययन करने वाले मेरे जैसे बहुत ही कम लोग होंगे।
मुझे भाषाओं के प्रति बहुत लगाव है मैं अंग्रेजी को तो अच्छी तरह जानता हूं मुझे अंग्रेजी के बारे में जितना गर्व है उतना ही मराठी के बारे में भी। मैंने कई साल तक बहिष्कृत भारत, जनता, मूकनायक, आदि साप्ताहिक पत्र पत्रिकाओं का संपादन किया है। मैंने मराठी में भी काफी लिखा है जनता पत्र में छपने वाले मुख्य संपादकीय लेखों में अधिकांश सभी मेरी कलम से निकले हैं। मैंने जर्मन भाषा का भी अच्छा अभ्यास किया है। जब मैं उसको कुछ भूल चुका हूं। किंतु कुछ ही दिनों में मैं बड़ी सफाई से उसको सकूंगा, इस बात का मुझे पूरा यकीन है। मैंने परसों अहमदाबाद में गुजराती में एक व्याख्यान दिया था। इस बात को तो आप जानते ही हैं । मुझे पहले मराठी में व्याख्यान देने में डर लगता था किंतु बाद में मुझे समझ में आया कि मैं मराठी में भी अच्छी तरह बोल सकता हूं वैसे मैं फ्रेंच भाषा भी जानता हूं।”
जब सूबेदार परिवार दापोली में था तब आनंदराव मराठी पाठशाला में पढ़ते थे । छोटे से भीवा के जब भी मन में आता था तभी आनंदराव के साथ पाठशाला में जाकर बैठ जाता था । उनके परिवार को 7-8 वर्षों तक दापोली में रहना पड़ा उस समय भीवा ने अपने पिताजी और भाइयों की मदद से अक्षर पहचान कर ली थी। किंतु उस पाठशाला में उनका नाम दर्ज नहीं किया गया था। जब उनका परिवार दोपाली में सतारा में आ बसा, तब कैंप स्कूल सतारा नाम की पाठशाला में आनंदराव का नाम दर्ज किया गया था। सूबेदार ने उसी पाठशाला में भीवा का भी नाम दर्ज करने का फैसला किया सूबेदार ने सन 1896 के नवंबर माह में इस पाठशाला में स्वयं जाकर भीवा का नाम दर्ज कराया उस पाठशाला में भीवा नियमित रूप से जाने लगा पाठशाला के छात्र के साथ पहचान हो जाने के बाद भीवा उनके साथ खेलने के लिए जाने लगा । उन छात्रों के साथ उसने हजार बार झगड़ा और मारपीट की होगी भीवा का स्वभाव पहले से ही इसी प्रकार का था। किंतु पाठशाला में होने वाले झगड़े और मारपीट की आंच घर के लोगों तक नहीं पहुंची अपने चुलबुल झगड़ालू किंतु होशियार और तेज स्वभाव के कारण और बेधड़क बोलने की कुशलता के कारण भीवा ने अपने शिक्षकों का प्रेम प्राप्त कर लिया था। सूबेदार के घर का रहन-सहन इतना साफ सुथरा था कि उसे देखकर ब्राह्मणों को भी शर्मिंदा होना पड़ता था। लड़के साफ सुथरी शर्ट और धोती पहनते थे सर पर मखमल की टोपी पहनी होती थी।
